Artist Lecture #2 Stanley Hainsworth

After review my old notes. I discovered that I have notes on this lecture that I went to earlier in the semester. The artist name is Stanley Hainsworth. He is a designer that worked for larger named design companies, such as lego. My overall opinion of the lecture was that he didn't talk a lot about design. Although he has list of 10 rule that designers should follow when designing. I didn’t fully grasp the rules because he was running out of time. I wish that he had shown, more examples of how to get into the industry, besides portfolios. He also spent a lot of his time describing his work with starbucks. I thought the designs of that were the best of out his entire portfolio comparably. I also thought that the most interesting part of the lecture was his in-house design firm. It liked a fun environment to work in. Overall I think that his lecture was pretty rushed.

Storyboard#4 Revision

For this pitch, I thought of the typical business type person who would

stay in this hotel. Typically, a person who goes on a business trip

would often focus on their work. With that idea in mind, I took into account

of trying to get this business person to unwind. As a result the idea resulted

in the person naturally unwinding in their environment. So a lot of this pitch is heavily based

on the idea of environment that demands attention.

The words used here are:

Mobile

Ease

Environment

Even though it is in a business setting, I didn't want to go to crazy with the fun

aspect. Also I added subtle hint of going green, because I didn't want to overwhelm the idea.

Storyboard #4

My idea for this project is to have more of an interactive enviroment. What I was going for was an enviroment that was self sufficient but also serves you as a customer. What I am trying to acheive with the shots is more this coming and going poping in and also poping in and out. To show more actual environment.

Proj 3 Script

INT. LITTLE GIRL’S BEDROOM – DAY

The room is relatively quiet, save for a slight bustle of someone moving things around.

A bag disappears from the bed, bringing three teddy bears of various sizes, into view. They are all sitting together.

A hand is seen turning off the light.

After a moment’s pause, the bedroom door swings open slowly.

TED

(glances at three soldier teddy bears making their way in through the bedroom door)

If it isn’t Captain Paddington’s soldier bears. Come to get the stuffing knocked out of you yet again, huh?

IMALA

And that cat Felix isn’t even here to drag you in this timeAlex, Ted and I will handle this. You just hold down the fort, ok?

ALEX

Okay…

(IMALA and TED jump off the bed)

CAPTAIN PADDINGTON

You know the drill! Go! Go!

(soldier bears charge forward and divide, running in separate directions)

LIEUTENANT BECKET charges to the right. He scales a shelf, only to find that it is too far away to help him get closer to the bed.

CAPTAIN PADDINGTON comes face to face with IMALA. She uses her superior weight to block CAPTAIN PADDINGTON’S view.

IMALA

Going somewhere?

CAPTAIN PADDINGTON

As a matter of fact, yes.

IMALA tugs on a bandana hanging off the seat of a nearby chair. She then, throws the bandana at CAPTAIN PADDINGTON, covering him.

CAPTAIN PADDINGTON appears to struggle for a moment before taking off the bandana. Annoyed, CAPTAIN PADDINGTON launches himself at IMALA.

IMALA struggles under him, trying to get free, but fails in the attempt.

CAPTAIN PADDINGTON

(mutters under breath)

Would you just hold still…

IMALA

(shouts over muttering)

“Ow! Stop pulling!

(pauses, trying to get free)

Alex, help! He’s going to undo my stitches! I think my stuffing’s falling out!”

ALEX

“But you said—”

IMALA

“Never mind what I said! Just come help me!”

ALEX

(reluctantly, glances at bed)

“Okay…”

[pans across the room]

TED

(blocks LIETENANT KLINE’S way)

“That all you got?”

LIETENANT KLINE attempts to get passed, but when he fails, he dives toward a desk and begins to scale one of the legs.

TED follows LIETENANT KLINE, and runs toward another leg of the same desk. He quickly attempts to scale his desk leg.

(on the other side of the room)

ALEX has joined the fight to free IMALA from CAPTAIN PADDINGTON’S grip.

With the help of ALEX, IMALA finally gets free. Looking up, they discover that LIETENANT BECKET is climbing up the baseboard of the bed.

ALEX

Imala! Look!

ALEX points at the bed.

IMALA looks around to where ALEX is pointing.

IMALA

Alex!

ALEX

I’m on it.

ALEX grabs IMALA around the waist and throws her toward LIETENANT BECKET.

IMALA

Yaaaah!

IMALA grabs the sheets of the bed when she lands to keep from slipping down the side.

Startled with her sudden appearance, LIETENANT BECKET slips down an inch.

IMALA pulls herself up the rest of the way to the top of the bed and waves her behind in LIETENANT BECKET’S face, victoriously.

IMALA

Yeah! Take that!

(A short ways away)

TED reaches the top of the desk, only to find that LIETENANT KLINE is already across the desk surface and climbing down the cord of a nearby lamp.

LIETENANT KLINE climbs near the bottom of the cord, and begins swinging on the cord. He bumps into the nearby wall.

TED slides down the leg of the desk and runs toward the bed.

LIETENANT KLINE, now using the wall to push off of, swings close to the bed. When he gets close, he jumps off the cord of the lamp and lands on the bed.

IMALA instantly turns around to face LIETENANT KLINE.

(across the room)

CAPTAIN PADDINGTON jumps up and down, still slightly restrained by ALEX.

CAPTAIN PADDINGTON

Yeah! You go Kline! And would you look at that, Becket, you’re almost there too! Hell yeah! No more sleeping in daddy’s cramped little collection case!

IMALA

Over my fuzzless, moth-eaten remains!

LIETENANT KLINE

Just you wait! Well, finally get books read to us and attend tea parties, and get little girl hugs!

LIETENANT BECKET has finally manages to pull himself over the top of the bed.

LIETENANT BECKET

And stop looking at all those other soldier bears that her father has collected. If that Russian bear stares at me one more time…

TED appears from behind LIETENANT KLINE and wrestles him to the ground.

TED

Gotcha!

A struggle between TED and LIETENANT KLINE ensues.

IMALA jumps forward, knocking herself and LIETENANT BECKET off the top of the bed. She lands on top of him.

Suddenly, CAPTAIN PADDINGTON and ALEX look toward the door.

All struggles stop.

TED

What is it?

CAPTAIN PADDINGTON

They’re back.

IMALA, ALEX and TED all get to their feet.

IMALA

Hurry!

TED and LIETENANT KLINE quickly settle down on a flat part of the bed.

IMALA and LIETENANT BECKET scramble to sit next to the foot of the bed.

ALEX finds and empty spot next to the desk and sits down.

CAPTAIN PADDINGTON looks around just in time to see the light turn on. He falls straight on his back in the middle of the floor.

A pair of shoes walk into the room, nearly stepping on CAPTAIN PADDINGTON.

Impatiently, a pair of hands grab CAPTAIN PADDINGTON, LIETENANT KLINE, and LIETENANT BECKET, tossing them out the door of her room.

The same hands gently grab IMALA and ALEX and put them back on the bed next to TED.

A bag is set down in front of the teddy bears.

All is completely still.

Possible Pitch Idea #3

Basically my idea for my pitch is about a shoes that goes through a series
of different enviroments. The shoe in turn doesn't like the change and
goes through a series of ploys to get revenge on its buyer. In the end it
back fire and the shoe realizes that it wasn't really worth it in.

1_Inspiration for Project #3

My reason for choosing this video in particular
is the fact that the shoes take on their own personalty based on the design of the shoe. So my
case, I want to do the same thing but without the stop-motion.

Superstar Review

I found it interesting how well the dialogue and the dolls interact with each other.Several times throughout the film, I kept waiting to see if the lips of the dolls would move. So in a sense what was accomplished was a idea of an illusion. I think that was director was going for because of the use of dolls instead of actual actors. The viewer felts as if they were transported into a different child like world. I thought it worked pretty well pertaining to the subject matter.

Artist Lecture #!1: Art DiFuria

Surprisingly, I found Art Difuria's lecture to be interesting. His way of lecturing did remind me a lot of Duran's style but a lot more humor in nature. I found it to be interesting how Vanhanskurt interweave a little of his perspective into his pieces. What I mean by this is that in each of his drawing he adds a difference perspective to Rome. In one drawing he takes a view of a building and changes it into a ruin which in a covered with vines, etc. In turn I wonder why exactly did he do this? Is it his own commentary on the view of Rome? In a sense he creates some form of an illusion, especially on the beginning pieces that was referred back to. Overall, I thought the lecture was interesting;.

Maya Deren: Meshes of the Afternoon

While I was viewing this films, I had to look at a little more

closely at the small clues that are presented through out

the film. My basic interpretation was that of the idea of the

mind and the unconscious. I guess you can say the Deren

was trying to accomplish a dream like idea for this film. What

prompted this idea was the scene with herself at a table, split

into threes. What immediately came to mind was the idea of the

three subconscious: ID,Ego, and Superego. I know that may

be stretching it a bit, but it has a similar idea. All of the three

versions of her selves were looking at the key which then turns into a knife.

So is it possible that the key was a way of symbolizing a entry into

her mind?

The structure of the film was interesting in a way because

the was no dialogue. So in a way it was a mystery without dialogue.

The audience has to follow her clues in order to figure out

what is going on. The most interesting portion of the film was the

cinematography. The camera moved with the actress while also

expressing the appropriate emotion. An example would be the

the scene where Maya is climbing up the stairs, while hitting the

wall. The camera moves with her in the scene so it gives an

uneasy feeling. Also what I felt throughout the films was a

feeling of claustrophobia, because we (audience) never get

a chance to see the entire space. We are also packed into

a small space.

Rehearsal Notes

Rehearsals: Rehearsal of the talent went very well. I was surprised it how well the actors fell into the roles. There weren't any difficulties in conjunction with the script. I know when it

comes the actual acting, it will go over well.

Shots/Locations:What i taught was a harder issue to tackle was the issue of imagining the space.

Although the talent generally was a success, the technicalities of how we are going

to place everything became an issue. We didn't know whether or not what angle we

be best to accommodate the space. An example would be the office scenes. Even though it's in the DA media, the angles of the tables would pose an issue once we start shooting. Also I was wonding about the color of the room and how it's going to affect the lighting. Even though the lighting of the room can be controlled the wall are very white. So in a sense that white might have an effect on how we light the individual actors. Generally, it more a on set issues that we as a group have to overcome.

Inspirational Example

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N445qz-Uepo

As a whole, I think this is a pretty good of example

of how a sock puppet work. Even though it is not fully a

sock puppet (has arms and legs), I think the small gesture give

a general idea. As a group, this would be a great example of

how a puppet can look through a camera. You can see the movements

of the hands but very subtly. Maybe this can be utilized in the group project.

Possible Pitch Idea

1. Starts with a view of the environment (which in this case is the kitchen
and bathroom)
2. Character is introduced via the hands and begins a cleaning
ritual/regime
3. Then a new establish shot is shown of the character leaving. As a way
of showing a new day
4. A group of people, a person waves, but the character keeps her distance.
5. Will in class someone bumps into her a spill some unknown substance on
her.
6. The character freaks out and can be seen washing hands in restroom
7. Another shot of her home; she can be seen frantically cleaning but more
extreme to an extent
8.shows her leaving again but this time she is prepared.
9. she drops her prize gloves into a mud or some unknown puddle.
10. She hesitant to pick up the gloves
11. Finally reaches down to pickup the gloves
12. Stares intently at the gloves
13. walks away

The GodFather I

Here's Some of my inspiration. As far from my idea as this is, I like how the they
use their environment. Its the same yellow ornate environment that makes up the presence
of the movie. The movie is entirely based off the presence.

Self-Critique #1

Title: Bad Day
Idea: My initial idea started with a girl trying to handle a series of misfortunes. As the story progressed it showed her dealing with it unsuccessfully.
Source: My source originated from a television show called, Snapped. I wondered what was the driving point that caused all those women to their actions. With that idea in mind, I wanted to show a character lashing out.
Key Emotion: The main emotion that I wanted to portray was building frustration.
Synopsis: The story starts with a woman in her work office. As she progress through the work day, it gradually becomes more stressful. Eventually she couldn't take the stress anymore and leaves the office. She then comes home to experience more misfortune with her bathtub and microwave. After going through more misfortune she sits done on her patio to contemplate her day. In a fit of frustration she throws the teacup down and it shatters. The story then ends with her going back to work. At this point she is prepared for the new work day.
Theme: The theme was her going through and reacting to different situations
Strengths: I thought that our shots and location access was what made our film stronger.
I mean we had an access to a empty office where we can do a variety of angles.
Problems: Personally, I had problems with the lighting. At first, I thought I had a pretty good sense of lighting. However when it was time to shoot, it felt a little overwhelmed.
Journal: One thing that I didn't anticipate was how long the filming process was going to take. Also I didn't realize how long it takes to block out a shot and then do lighting.

Script

We start out in an office building, behind the office of the character, hereby the “woman”, as she talks on the phone. She looks serious. She hangs up and writes things down on a piece of paper. She takes a sip from a teacup. She makes a call to someone, dialing an extension, but hangs up when no one answers. She gets up frustrated, grabs the paper, and leaves the office.

It cuts away to the woman sitting at a chair on a balcony with a lake behind her. She is holding the teacup as she looks unemotionally into space. She looks very worn down.

Cut back to warehouse. Woman is seen walking into warehouse and looking around for product. She goes up stair/ladder thing. She comes back down most likely with a product.

Cut to shipping station. She sets the product and paper down on the shipping station, then leaves the screen.

It cuts to the hallway outside her office and shows her going to it. She looks inside and sees a stack of papers. She picks up a piece of paper, reads a line, and walks back out of the office with the paper.

Cut back to the warehouse. Show her finding another product.

Cut to shipping station, and show her putting the product down.

Cut back to her walking in office. The stack of papers has gotten larger. Have her pick up another piece in a haughty and irritated way and walk out the door.

Cut to the warehouse and have her grabbing a product.

Cut back to her entering office to an even bigger pile of paper.

Cut back to warehouse. Have several shots (3-4) of her walking into warehouse holding a piece of paper.

Finally, show another cut of her walking into her office. The mountain of paper has grown enormous and boxes litter the floor/desk space. She sits down a moment, takes a sip of tea, sets down the teacup. It falls over, spilling all over a bunch of papers. Even more frustrated, she grabs a post-it note, writes something. Then grabs her jacket, a teacup and walks out the door. She sticks the post-it to the door on her way out and slams it, showing us that the post-it says “Sick, later”.

Cuts to balcony. Woman is still looking emotionlessly out into space. She raises the teacup to her mouth, takes a slow sip, and puts the cup down. Staring down at its contents, we see what she sees.

Cut to woman attempting to get into her car. She drops her keys on the ground. As she bends down to pick up her keys she drops her purse. The contents of the purse spill out. She gets up, opens the door, and shoves the purse into the passenger seat. She collects the items that dropped and throw them into the car. She gets in, and drives off.

Cuts back to the balcony. The woman gets up from her chair and her attention is completely focused on the teacup now. Then suddenly her gaze shoots toward the window as if she has seen something.

Cuts to a residential neighborhood. We see a car pull into a driveway. Zoom in or cut forward to closer to the house, and we see the woman getting out of the car and walking towards the mailbox. She gets to the mailbox and takes the mail out.

Cut into the house, camera pointed at entryway. We see the woman walking through the door, and into the entryway. She sets down her belongings at a table located off screen (keeping the teacup and mail), and the camera pans around to see her as she walks into the kitchen.

Cut to the kitchen, we see her doing various things in the kitchen, including put down the teacup and mail, then walk out.

Cut to the bathroom, she does various things in the bathroom, among them starting up the bathwater. She leaves the bathroom.

Cut to the kitchen again. She gets out something to be microwaved, she puts it in the microwave and attempts to microwave it, soon realizing that the microwave is broken. She gets more frustrated.

Cut to the bathroom. She stops the water and feels it. She looks down at the water, moving her hand lithely through it, before slapping the water and creating a splash. She gets pissed and leaves the bathroom.

Cut back to the balcony. Slightly shorter shot of her staring out into space, still cradling the teacup.

Cut back to the kitchen. Woman is looking through the mail now. Several of the letters say “Past Due”. She walks to the table and sits down. She begins to read through the mail when the lights go out. Woman can barely be seen looking up toward the light, her mail still in hand.

Cuts to woman on balcony. She turns and looks down again at the teacup briefly. With great force, she smashes it on the floor.

Cuts to woman getting out of car with what appears to be a portfolio clutched in one hand. Her mood appears much improved. A smile is on her face. Shot ends with her entering warehouse door.

Group Assignment Inspiration

Basically, these are some inspiration painting by Edward Hopper. In relation to our chosen subject matter, I think the use of space is most important. I mean in all three of these compositions he manipulates the space and even the color to communicate a message of isolation. What is most important is the lighting also. The most prominent being the middle picture. Hopper separates the warm and muted colors so we can focus on the subject.

First Film

For my first film, I came up basically with the idea of a mirror. So here is my process:

IDEA: I thought about how in class during the demo someone was waving their head back
and forth. Then I though about how the camera is a object that is seeing you. So basically its
an inanimate objects that projects yourself even if you can't see it. With that idea in mind
I instantly though of a mirror.

Conceptual: I think that a mirror is a way of documenting yourself without actual record.
Mentally you see yourself as you change. The mirror stays the same. So mentally a person is
documenting themselves. Also I thought of this as a way of showing routines.

Technical: This was basically an experiment. I really need to work on the lighting thought. I couldn't think of what to do with that.
